Answers:

When I use the loop or auto play control on a flash movie,
it does not loop or auto play, why?

The tool will always set the loop or auto play options that exist in PowerPoint, but not all movies have been built in such a way as to allow them to loop or auto play this way, e.g., they might have an in-built command to hold on to the first screen until the user clicks a button within the movie. In most cases, the way in which the flash movie has been built will override any command applied to the flash movie in PowerPoint.

Why does the Flash Toolbar not appear when the tool is loaded in PowerPoint 97?
The Flash Toolbar is not compatible with PowerPoint 97. If loaded into PowerPoint 97, it will not give and error message or cause a problem, but the toolbar itself will not be visible or useable.

A message box has appeared saying the following: 'This version of the WizKit Flash Toolbar has failed. Please contact The-In-Shop for updates and information'.
This message will appear if:

a. Your demonstration version of the tool has expired, in which case please update to the full version
b. Your system has undergone a change that the tool no longer supports, e.g. new system software

If you are a registered user and you think the answer may be 'b', then email your user details to us using the email address registered to your version of the Flash Toolbar to find out if a free update is available.

I have used the transparent option; however, my flash movie
and/or the movie box is not transparent.

The tool will always set the transparent options that exist in PowerPoint, but not all movies have been built in such a way as to allow them to use this option. In most cases, the transparent command in PowerPoint, applied manually or via the Flash Toolbar will not result in a transparent flash movie or movie box.

The Flash Toolbar was installed and working but now the Toolbar
has disappeared.

It may be that the toolbar has been closed. To manually make the toolbar appear, use the menu command 'View/Toolbar' and select the tool that you wish to use, as shown in the image below. If the tool or toolbar does not appear in this list, then use the option below to check that the tool is loaded correctly.

To check that the Add-in is correctly loaded, use the menu command 'Tools/Marco/Add-Ins'. This will display the Add-ins dialogue box. The Add-in should be listed in the Add-Ins dialogue box, and depending on your version of PowerPoint it should have a tick or cross next to the name, to show that Add-in is loaded. Select the Add-in you require and then click the 'Unload' button, and then click the 'Load' button. This should reload the Add-in and cause the tool or toolbar to reappear.

If the tools Add-in is not shown in the Add-ins box, repeat the install steps shown in the guide below.

Can the tool be install on a network via a IT system, e.g. SMS
The Add-in can be placed in the default Microsoft PowerPoint Add-in folder and will be automatically added to PowerPoint.

Or, it can be placed in any other location and loaded by adding the registry entry: HKEY_CURRENT_USER \ Software \ Microsoft \ Office \ 11.0 \ PowerPoint \ AddIns \flash_toolbar. The correct details for your network can be found by manually loading the Add-in and then searching the registry for the Add-in name.

What changes can be made to corporate versions for the Flash Toolbar?
If you are a major company and are thinking of purchasing a corporate licence for the tool, we would be happy to make a range of changes to the tool to better suit your users' individual needs. These can include items such as:

  • Changing the tool defaults to meet the company standards
  • Locking options to enforce a company standard
  • Changing the tool functions or actions
  • Adding or removing items on the toolbar
  • Changing the destination URL for the help button to a custom page on your network
  • Assisting with a network-wide push install to all users
  • Creating a custom web installer on your intranet, allowing users to choose if they wish to install your custom version
  • Linking the installer and/or the toolbar and tools to an online log showing user and tool use

The above options will be charged as an additional costs on top of the corporate licence fee.

The flash movies (swf files) played fine in the flash player; however, once I imported them into PowerPoint using the Flash Toolbar, the action scripts or navigation did not work correctly.

The Flash Toolbar automates the complex manual import of the flash movie process. It does not change or alter the movie itself in any way. The flash movie will behave/play the same manner regardless of how it was inserted into the PowerPoint presentation.

If the movie is not playing as expected, or in the same way in which it plays within the flash player, it is normally one of two reasons:

  • The installed copy of Flash and/or its accompanying files are out of date. Remember that the files used to play the flash movie within its own player may not be the same files it is using to play a movie within PowerPoint. It is recommended that you update your copy of Flash to the newest version available at www.flash.com.
  • It may be that the features you are using are not compatible with flash movies used within the PowerPoint environment. Normally this only affects a few types of non-linear navigation and complex action scripts that save variables or communicate with the host system. It is recommended that you simplify the movie in the areas that are failing.
